Rituals

There has been a race at our house nearly every morning since we moved to Spanish Fork. It begins as Matt pulls out of the driveway on his way to work. Collin and Annie stand at the sidewalk and as Matt rolls out of the driveway onto the street they take off like olympic champions racing for the gold. They run down to the end of our street where the road turns a bit. They’re always a head at first because they take off before Matt puts the car into drive, but by the time they’ve passed a couple house, Matt has gained and taken the lead. Collin and Annie stop running and shouts of “Bye, Dad!” fill the street. Then they run home as Matt continues on his way to work. I look at this morning ritual and just imagine the voices of my kids after they’ve grown: ”Remember when . . .?” This morning I took my camera out so I could capture this moment, but I guess just needing to get out and run, the kids were down the street before Matt could get out of the driveway. As I was feeling frustrated, I realized that as long as the weather is decent this will happen again tomorrow and the day after that, and hopefully the day after that, until the morning air turns frosty making the sidewalks too cold to run on in bare feet.
